McGovern Campaign and Senate Staff Alumni Registry

The George and Eleanor McGovern Center for Leadership and Public Service offers a variety of leadership and public service centered programs for students, faculty, staff and the global community. The center was launched in 2006 and it is named in honor of two of Dakota Wesleyan University’s most prominent alumni. Senator George McGovern distinguished himself as a pilot during World War II, a former congressman and senator who ran as his party’s nominee for president in 1972, and as a United Nations Ambassador who fought to end world hunger. George and Eleanor McGovern have received more than 20 honorary doctoral degrees from the nation’s premier academic institutions, including Dakota Wesleyan University.

The leadership and public service academic program prepares some of Dakota Wesleyan's best students for careers in public service through selected coursework, leadership seminars, research projects, and internships that lead to a major or minor in leadership and public service. Interns are placed with federal, state, local, and foreign government or private not-for-profit agencies, such as the White House, the U.S. Congress, many state and federal agencies, humanitarian agencies, church mission programs, and the United Nations. Exceptional students in any program of study offered by the university are encouraged to consider a minor in leadership and public service.

Other center programs include the annual McGovern Center Conference, which brings some of the world’s most prominent leaders to campus, as well as McGovern Issues Forums which bring debates, symposia, and speakers of timeliness and relevance to Dakota Wesleyan University. The center invites alumni with careers in public service to campus for panels, class lectures and seminars to share their expertise with current students.
